Day Engraving Seminar - Daily Schedule and Details

All listed items will be demonstrated and you may work at your own pace on the selections of your choice.

 

Day 1:

  • Graver set ups:
  1. Onglette or knife x 3
  2. Round 2
  3. Script 1
  4. Flat 1
  5. Liner 1
  • Handle modification, figuring proper length, face, heel & tang angles
    hot bending for angle - hardening & tempering
  • Graver sharpening
  • Fitting angle to material
  • Hand & power sharpening
  • Selecting right graver shape for job
  • Testing edge & angle for best cut
  • Improvising needed gravers w/ nails & burs
  • Basic cuts & applications: carving, brite cut, bead setting, decoration, die, trim
  • Practice project plates: straight, curved, tapers, beads, wriggle, hairline, wide line, deep, bevel, lining, short cuts, long cuts, varied width, parallel
  • Design transfer methods - 4 - drawing, Xerox, tape, paper
  • Trouble shooting cut problems & correcting gravers
  • Practice & experiments

Day 2:

  • Carving pierced scrollwork pendant - silver (flat casting)
  • Piercing solid stock tips & techniques & procedures
  • Outlining cutting design elements
  • Rough stock removal on bevels & background
  • Finish cutting & surface treatments
  • Polishing & finishing & practice for piercing & cutting

Day 3:

  • Bead setting, gypsy setting - round brilliants - practice steps & set
  • Bright cut for bead set - round brill's - practice steps & set
  • Surface decoration - textures, liner stipple, wriggle, ice, florentine
  • Die Cutting Applications:
    • Trims
    • Flowers
    • Relief scrolls
    • Level background
    • Seals
    • Stamps and maker's marks (we'll make some)
  • Trim & Finish Applications:
    • Flashing
    • Burrs & bumps
    • Solder clean up
    • Bezel trimming clean up
    • Turning w/ flex shaft
    • Practice
