The Lakeshore Drive Portico - A Master Work by William L. Howard, Headmaster

Lamp Close-Up The entrances at 3530 and 3534 are topped with copper and wrought iron canopies supported by the forged iron, scroll work brackets and integrated glass wind screens on either side. Brass lamps are built into both brackets. For iron buffs, these six hand forged brackets are of particular interest. Each was forged entirely by hand, using a traditional coke fired forge to heat 3" wide x 3/4" thick steel until it could be forged into shape with hammer and anvil. There are numerous design elements combined in each bracket to complete the whole and all six had to match. They took 5 of the hottest months of the year to make and each weighs in at about 200 pounds. They are the largest examples of hand forged , iron scroll work ever made in this country.
