The Lakeshore Drive Portico - A Master Work by William L. Howard, Headmaster |
|
Page 4 of 7 The scale of the work is impressive. 8000 pounds of steel, 1200 pounds of copper, 50 pounds of brass and 100's of pounds of glass were used in creating the main entrance portico, two other entrance canopies and wrought iron drive gates at the rear of the building. The work, in total, took 15 months to create and install. William L. Howard of Howard Academy for the Metal Arts designed and engineered the project. He forged out the scroll work brackets. Aaron A. Howard, his son, forged and fabricated the canopies, portico, pillars and the gates at the age of 23! Both men currently reside in Stoughton, Wisconsin, and may be contacted through the Academy for more information.
